Architectural bike tour - Bikes and Bridges
29 June, 10:30am - 5pm Battersea Park, junction of Carriage Drive North and Carriage North West
Battersea Park, SW11 4NJ

This is an all day "SPOKE" ride which connects all five of the London Festival of Architecture’s hubs along a riverside route.
Led by eminent structural engineer, Mark Whitby, and experienced bridge designer, Alex Lifschutz, this tour examines a fascinating range of bridges from the last 150 years.
Crossing rivers and docks, they range from lightweight pedestrian bridges to heavier road and rail bridges, spanning the Thames and connecting disjointed sections of Docklands. All of them have contributed to London’s social and economic strength and, significantly, its extraordinary urbanity. Riders will be constantly reminded of the relationship between the structures they are looking at and those supporting them – the need for lightweight frames to robustly support heavy objects, damping unwelcome vibration and yet creating an exciting and memorable ride.
Mark is a passionate engineer, slightly unreliable cyclist and urbanite who grew up on the Thames. His work includes the design of a number of bridges and engineering for numerous riverside buildings. http://www.engineering-timelines.com
Alex is director of architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and is interested in the benefits of design and technical innovation in improving the social realm. The practice’s two London pedestrian bridges are examples of this.
Start point: junction of Carriage Drive North and Carriage North West in Battersea Park, just off Albert Bridge Road.
Organised by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the ride will be marshalled by Southwark Cyclists.
