Student Festival: Central Saint Martin's-Alexandra Gate
20 June - 24 June Alexandra Gate
Hyde Park, W2

At the end of Exhibition Road lies a key entrance to Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, where visitors to the Great Exhibition of 1851 would have entered to see Crystal Palace in its original glory. Today, this historical site is dominated by the relentless traffic of cars, taxis and bicycles creating a somewhat chaotic entry point to the park, and a shocking transition for those emerging out of it.
The installation by students of MA Creative Practices for Narrative Environments at Central Saint Martins seeks to address the present nature of the site, by examining it from a future perspective. They ask: How will the traffic, gates, guard house, traffic lights, and signs be understood two hundred years from now? What meaning might be given to the site it if all its history was to be erased by a great flood?
By imagining Alexandra Gate as it would have been revealed to the renowned archeologist Dr. Thomas Hyde (a fictional character from the year 2208 brought to life for the duration of the installation) the site will be presented as an opportunity to reflect on the nature the urban environment that is London circa 2008.
